Daily 5/CAFE

During reading workshop time, Daily 5 and CAFE strategies will be used.

CAFE stands for:
C-Comprehension (I understand what I read)
A-Accuracy (I can read all the words)
F-Fluency (I can read the words smoothly with few errors)
E-Expanded Vocabulary (I know, find, and use interesting words)

During both whole class and guided reading instruction, students will be learning and applying different reading strategies to support each of these areas.  Ask your child what strategies he/she is working on to continue reinforcing these strategies at home.

So far, two of the Daily 5 strategies have been introduced-Read to Self and Read to Someone.  Students are working on building their reading stamina to read and stay focused for longer periods of time.  Also, students are working on coaching each other while partner reading by asking if the other needs more time or help.  If students need to help each other, they have learned different strategies to support each other.

We have emphasized finding good-fit books to put in our book box.  While students have looked for "just-right books", they have used the I-PICK strategy:
I-I pick a book
P-Purpose-why do I want to read this book?
I-Interest-am I interested in this book?
C-Comprehension-do I understand what I am reading?
K-Knowledge-do I know most of the words?

Please support your child in choosing good-fit books.  By choosing good-fit books, students will be able to apply the reading strategies they are learning and continue developing a love for reading while building their confidence and improving their reading comprehension strategies.
